Overview: Stunning fast Ford – Focus RS500, 119/500 finished in 3M matt black carfoil over metallic black gloss. This was one of the most interesting and challenging details that we have carried out to date.

Additional information: The matt carfoil used on the RS500 is a sensitive material and needs treating with some care. Apart from the risk of lifting edges with improper use of a power washer the material itself cannot be exposed to solvents or other harsh chemicals. This ruled out the use of our usual tar solvent, bug removal and door shut degreaser chemicals. Less aggressive workarounds had to be found.
Seeking advice from the labyrinthine Ford technical department and 3M Bracknell proved to be problematic. Swissvax UK came to the rescue advising the use of their Opaque product range especially formulated for this type of surface finish. The products consisting of Car Bath, Pre-wax Cleanser, Detail Finish and of course the Opaque Wax itself were easy to use and achieved a first class result.
The wax contains less oils than a ‘normal’ wax and dries to a slick yet matt finish. Its cure time is very fast and the car was treated on a panel by panel basis.
Cleansing process: Car washed twice with Swissvax Opaque Car Bath. Door shuts and reveals cleaned with a more concentrated solution of Car Bath. Matt wrap treated with Swissvax Opaque Pre-wax Cleanser. Wheels cleaned with AS Smartwheels (face) and VP Bilberry (inners). Wheels then treated with Wolf’s Chemicals De-contaminant and then de-tarred. Exhaust tips de-tarred and then cleaned with Meguiars NXT Metal Polish and superfine steel wool.
Protection process: Swissvax Opaque Wax applied to matt surfaces then buffed off. Swissvax Best of Show Wax applied to gloss surfaces then buffed off. All glass sealed with Wolf’s Glass Sealant. Wheels sealed with Swissvax Autobahn wheel wax. Tyres treated with Swissvax Pneu tyre dressing. Door seals treated with Einzett Gummi Pfledge. All exterior plastics and engine bay treated with G303 Aerospace Protectant.
