Ceramic or sealant coating?

A short guide to choosing the product that is right for you.

Ceramic coating

Currently the most durable coatings available for vehicle protection.  They have light-marring (scratch) resistance but are not capable of protecting against hedge-strikes or stone chipping.  Durability is around 15000-20000 miles subject to proper ongoing care and will vary according to driving conditions.

Ceramic coatings need to cure for around 4-12 hours (depending on the actual product used) before being exposed to rain.  Our fastest curing product is ‘weather ready’ in 4-6 hours. Ideally your car should be garaged overnight unless the weather forecast is for no rain.  If there is no shelter available we will use a sacrificial overcoat of low SiO2 coating to temporarily protect the ceramic coating whilst it cures.

Please note; we do not recommend that ceramic coatings are topped with wax as it may interfere with the hydrophobic properties of the coating.  Additionally, ceramic coatings have a slightly more sterile appearance than the warmth offered by a traditional wax.

To obtain maximum benefit from a ceramic coating it should be professionally decontaminated and topped-up annually.  The minimum level of follow up service advised is our Base Detail.

Choose a ceramic coating if you want a state-of-the-art protection system that offers long lasting protection and light-marring resistance for your car.

Sealant coating

The sealants that we use are of very high quality and perform better than the usual household names sold by dealerships.  Our sealant coatings cost significantly less than a ceramic coating as the products used are cheaper to buy and they take less time to apply

Chemically, sealants are similar to ceramic coatings but do not quite have the same durability, typically around 10000 miles subject to proper ongoing care and according to driving conditions.   Whilst they are durable they do not have the light-marring protection of a ceramic coating.

The sealants we use cure within an hour or so and do not need to be protected from rain for any longer period of time after application.

To obtain maximum benefit from a sealant coating it should be professionally decontaminated and topped-up annually.  The minimum level of follow up service advised is our Base Plus detail.

Choose a sealant coating if you want an economical protection system for your new car or if your car covers significantly less than an average mileage of 8-10000 miles each year.  Additionally, if you prefer the warm look of a waxed finish then a sealant is an ideal base for future wax coatings.
